Stephen Curry: "Basketball Mortality" The Countdown to Retirement and the Warriors’ Final Push

Basketball fans around the world are well aware that the end of an era is approaching. Stephen Curry, one of the NBA’s most beloved players, is nearing the twilight of his legendary career. At 36 years old, the Golden State Warriors’ superstar has admitted he is starting to think more seriously about retirement, a sentiment that will surely bring a sense of sadness to fans who have witnessed his greatness over the past decade.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews, Curry opened up about the inevitability of his career winding down. “More than I probably have before,” he said when asked about retirement. “It’s OK to accept and acknowledge that the end is near, at whatever point. But only because it allows you to enjoy what’s happening right now.” Curry’s honesty about his future reflects a mature mindset: embracing the present while understanding that his time in the league is finite.

Despite being 36, Curry remains one of the most dynamic players in the league. However, as his 37th birthday looms in March, his focus is now on winning a fifth NBA championship, something he acknowledges may be his last realistic shot. “I know I only have a certain amount of years left, and I want to win desperately,” he shared. The urgency to add another title to his already impressive resume is clear, and it’s one the Golden State Warriors are equally aware of.

Over the past year, the Warriors have been active in trying to maximize their championship window while Curry is still playing at a high level. After failing to land LeBron James in a trade last February, the Warriors pursued other potential stars like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen in the offseason. With the trade deadline approaching on February 6, the Warriors are expected to make another push for a co-star to help Curry chase that elusive fifth title. Names like Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram have been floated as potential trade targets.

Curry’s individual stats this season reflect a slight dip, averaging 21.8 points per game—his lowest since the 2019-20 season. However, this decline is largely due to Warriors head coach Steve Kerr’s decision to utilize a deeper rotation, which has limited Curry’s minutes to just 31.0 per game, his lowest in over five seasons.

As Curry approaches the final chapters of his career, his legacy is already solidified. His influence on the game, particularly the evolution of the three-point shot, will be felt for generations. Whether or not he wins another championship, Curry’s impact on the game of basketball is beyond measure, and his final years in the NBA will undoubtedly be filled with excitement, drama, and hope for one last title run.
