Sarah De Bie, partner to Belgian cycling star Wout Van Aert, recently offered a candid glimpse into their life together, revealing a down-to-earth relationship despite the glitz and glamour of their surroundings. Although Monaco, where they currently reside, is often associated with luxury and wealth, Sarah shared that she and Wout lead a modest lifestyle, choosing simplicity over extravagance.
“Some people find it necessary in Monaco to show off their luxurious lives. We don’t. Van Aert and I also just go to Carrefour in our tracksuits to do our shopping,” Sarah said. This reflection underscores their preference for staying grounded despite living in a place where appearances often matter. Both Wout and Sarah come from small villages in Belgium, and they have maintained a down-to-earth attitude toward life, regardless of where they live.
Sarah further emphasized that Monaco, despite its reputation, is a small community where you can live however you choose. She said, “Monaco is actually a small community too. How you live there, you choose for yourself.” For Sarah and Wout, this means keeping their lives private and unpretentious, far from the flashy image that some may expect from high-profile athletes.
When it comes to spending their wealth, Wout’s big purchase was not something to flaunt. “He finally dared to reward himself with something he had been dreaming of for so long: a Porsche,” Sarah shared. Wout’s passion for fast cars is well known, but Sarah pointed out that he would never show off on social media. “Don’t look for photos on Instagram, because he will never show off. Our family didn’t even know,” she added, highlighting Wout’s humility despite his success.
However, the transition to fame hasn’t always been without challenges. Sarah recalled the warnings she received when Wout’s success began to take off: “‘Pay attention, Sarah. Money and fame, it does something to a person.’ But Wout is still Wout,” she said, assuring that despite his fame, Wout has remained true to himself.
Though Sarah is immensely supportive, she also admitted that she struggles to watch Wout’s dangerous descents during races. “I haven’t dared to watch Wout’s descents for a long time,” she confessed. Instead, she fills the time with household tasks, hearing the race commentary from another room while avoiding the stress of seeing him take risks.
Sarah also highlighted how their personalities complement each other perfectly. “He is spontaneous and goes with the flow. Wout is never stressed. I, on the other hand, am a perfectionist and get worried quickly,” she explained. Their contrasting traits balance their relationship, with Wout calming her down and Sarah helping him focus on the serious aspects of life.
In a touching moment, Sarah recalled a time when she was angry with Wout, and her mother helped her realize how much he cared for her. “My mother said: ‘Sarah, don’t you see how that boy looks at you? Don’t you see how much he loves you? He’s the best thing that could have happened to you,’” Sarah said, realizing the depth of Wout’s affection for her.
Through these insights, Sarah De Bie paints a picture of a relationship built on mutual respect, humility, and love. Despite the fame and fortune, they remain grounded, supporting each other through both the highs and the lows.
