Ryan Searle Slams Controversial European Tour Rule Changes

Darts star Ryan Searle has not held back in criticizing the latest amendments to the European Tour rules, a decision that has sparked debate among players and fans alike.

The new rule change, announced this week, alters the qualification process for the second round of European Tour events. Previously, the top 16 players from the Pro Tour Order of Merit were given automatic byes, recognizing their form and consistency on the circuit. However, the new system now grants these byes to the top 16 players from the overall Order of Merit, meaning those who have excelled on the Pro Tour must now compete from the opening round.

The adjustment has led to speculation that it is designed to protect high-profile players from an early exit, raising questions about fairness. Searle, currently ranked 19th in the world, was quick to express his frustration on social media.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the man known as ‘Heavy Metal’ posted:

“What is the point of the ProTour Order of Merit? The one that shows the true form and consistency of players. Asking for a friend.”

His remarks struck a chord with fellow players and fans, igniting a discussion about the legitimacy of the change. Australian star Damon Heta, ranked eighth in the PDC standings, joined the conversation with a humorous jab:

“Mate I thought it was a New Year New You with no complaining.”

Searle swiftly responded:

“You are already on the face doesn’t fit blacklist so back me up.”

This comment referenced Heta’s controversial omission from the Premier League lineup, despite his strong performances. PDC chief Matt Porter admitted that factors beyond playing ability, such as marketability, influenced the selection process—a frustration shared by many players who feel overlooked.

Searle’s Vision Struggles and Triumphs

Beyond his battles with darts politics, Searle has also had to contend with a personal challenge—his eyesight. The 36-year-old suffers from astigmatism, a condition that causes blurred and distorted vision. Despite this, he has climbed the ranks of professional darts, proving his resilience and talent.

In a 2023 interview with the Daily Star, Searle revealed that he only started wearing contact lenses midway through his career, which significantly improved his game.

“I was about [No.] 54 in the world playing without contact lenses, then I went up to about [No.] 15 once I could see a little bit better,” he shared.

However, his vision remains imperfect, and during matches, he sometimes has to ask the referee where his dart has landed. Despite this obstacle, Searle has adapted his playing style and continues to compete at the highest level.

Reflecting on his childhood, Searle admitted that his poor eyesight was never properly diagnosed:

“It was never picked up at school but I knew my eyesight wasn’t very good. Before the eye tests, I’d go up to the chart and try and memorise the lower line so I didn’t have to wear glasses.”

Despite these challenges, Searle has become one of the most formidable players in the sport. His outspoken stance on the European Tour rule changes further cements his reputation as a competitor who is unafraid to challenge decisions he deems unfair.

With the debate over the rule changes continuing to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the PDC will address the concerns raised by Searle and other players. However, one thing is certain—Ryan Searle is not one to stay silent when he believes an injustice has been done.
