Paul Arizin Granddaughter Recount Touching Moment Spent with Wilt Chamberlain

In 1993, a 12-year-old Stephanie Arizin penned a heartfelt letter to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, seeking his autograph. Stephanie was the granddaughter of Paul Arizin, a Hall of Famer and Chamberlain’s former teammate on the Philadelphia Warriors. Due to address changes and unforeseen delays, Chamberlain didn’t receive the letter until three years later. Upon reading it, he immediately reached out to Stephanie to apologize for the delayed response. This gesture marked the beginning of a profound and touching relationship.

Unbeknownst to Chamberlain during their initial conversation, Stephanie was battling an inoperable brain tumor. She chose not to disclose her condition to him, focusing instead on their newfound friendship. However, upon learning of her illness from Stephanie’s father, Mike Arizin, Chamberlain was deeply moved. Determined to support her, he made it a point to call Stephanie every Friday night, offering words of encouragement and companionship. This routine continued unwaveringly until her passing on July 30, 1997.

Beyond their weekly conversations, Chamberlain sought to bring joy to Stephanie’s life in other meaningful ways. He invited her to accompany him to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team celebration. Despite being wheelchair-bound at the time, Stephanie experienced the event alongside Chamberlain, who ensured she met numerous basketball legends. Notably, he secured an autograph from Bill Russell, a feat considered exceptional given Russell’s general reluctance to sign autographs. Chamberlain approached Russell, explaining, “This is for my friend,” and Russell graciously complied.

This story sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of Chamberlain’s character. While often portrayed as a dominant and sometimes egotistical athlete, his relationship with Stephanie reveals a compassionate and empathetic side. He didn’t seek publicity for his actions; instead, he acted out of genuine kindness and a desire to make a difference in a young girl’s life. As Jim Barnett, a former teammate, noted, “He didn’t make any fanfare about it, no one knew about it. He did this on his own because he cared. He was compassionate.”

Stephanie’s father, Mike Arizin, later reflected on the bond between his daughter and Chamberlain, expressing profound gratitude for the NBA legend’s unwavering support during Stephanie’s final years. Chamberlain’s consistent presence provided comfort and joy to Stephanie, underscoring the profound impact of genuine human connection.

In remembering Wilt Chamberlain, it’s essential to acknowledge not just his athletic achievements but also the depth of his humanity. His relationship with Stephanie Arizin serves as a poignant reminder of the power of kindness and the lasting impact it can have on others.
