More than a week after devastating wildfires swept across Southern California, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) remains committed to locating dozens of missing individuals. The wildfires, including the Eaton and Palisades fires, left a trail of destruction, forcing mass evacuations and displacing thousands of residents.
The LASD Homicide Bureau’s Missing Persons Unit has been actively investigating cases related to the fires, receiving 43 missing persons reports as of Thursday. Out of these, 12 individuals have been safely located, while 31 remain unaccounted for. The Eaton Fire has contributed to 24 of these active cases, while the Palisades Fire accounts for the remaining seven.
Ongoing Search Efforts
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has assured the public that search and rescue teams are being deployed daily to sift through debris and burned structures in search of victims. These efforts are bolstered by specially trained cadaver dogs, which have already helped locate several deceased individuals in fire-ravaged areas.
“The efforts of our dedicated search teams continue as we work tirelessly to locate the missing,” Sheriff Luna said during a press conference. He emphasized the department’s commitment to providing closure for affected families.
Family Notifications and Public Assistance
To aid in the search, the Missing Persons Unit is actively reaching out to the families of those reported missing and issuing public bulletins. These bulletins serve as an important tool in identifying missing individuals and will remain in circulation until the person is found or identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
“This continued effort ensures the public’s assistance in locating those missing and supports families awaiting answers,” the LASD stated.
Authorities urge residents to report any new missing persons cases related to the wildfires to their local law enforcement agency. Additionally, any human remains discovered during search efforts undergo forensic examination by the county medical examiner for proper identification.
