Tokyo, Japan – In a demonstration of international solidarity, Japan’s government announced on Wednesday a $2 million aid package to assist California in recovering from devastating wildfires that have claimed dozens of lives and caused widespread destruction.
The financial assistance will be provided through the U.S.-based American Red Cross and is intended to support relief efforts for victims of the disaster, according to Japan’s Foreign Ministry. A ministry official stated that the funds will be used to establish evacuation sites, supply food, and provide psychological support for those affected by the fires.
“Japan will actively provide assistance for the relief of the victims and the earliest possible recovery of the affected areas,” the ministry said in a statement.

Since January 7, the wildfires have wreaked havoc across several suburban areas of Los Angeles, with dry conditions and strong winds fueling their rapid spread. As of Tuesday morning, local authorities reported over 20 fatalities and at least 30 people still missing. The disaster has forced the evacuation of approximately 88,000 residents, as emergency responders battle to contain the fires.
Particularly hard-hit areas include Pacific Palisades and Altadena, where more than 12,000 buildings have sustained damage. The wildfires have consumed more than 150 square kilometers of land, leaving a charred landscape and displacing thousands of families.
