Other podium finishers aren’t rewarded much more. The runner-up, Wout van Aert for the men’s race and Lucinda Brand for the women’s, will receive 2,500 euros—half of the winner’s prize. The third-place finishers, Thibau Nys and Puck Pieterse, earn just 1,250 euros. Unfortunately, the Dutch cycling federation has been unable to offer performance bonuses for some time due to its financial struggles. As a result, even though Van der Poel’s win is a monumental achievement in the sport, it doesn’t translate into additional earnings from his home country’s cycling body.

Fortunately, Mathieu van der Poel is far from reliant on World Championship prize money. The rider, who is a member of the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, is compensated handsomely through his contract with the team. His sponsorships, media appearances, and other endorsements likely add significantly to his income, meaning that the financial rewards of his World Championship victory are a mere drop in the ocean compared to his overall earnings.
