Now January is well under way many of us are looking at way to lose that excess holiday weight.

And for thousands of people, that includes joining programmes like Slimming World.

Slimming World started as a weight-loss magazine, but is now a multi-million pound business.

It’s ‘Syn’ system sees dieters allocated 15 points a day, which can be used on treats which may be higher in calories than the designated low-fat or ‘Free’ options.

But as many of us are also finding out right now, January is also a prime time for illness, with the cold weather prompting a raft of bugs and diseases doing the rounds of schools and workplaces.

And that means we’re guzzling a host of cold and flu remedies, from paracetamol sachets to sugary throat lozenges.

But if you’re on the Slimming World plan, can taking this medication add to the number of Syns you’re consuming?

we are well into flu season

‘Make sure you’re synning any cough sweets’

One Slimming World member, who asked not to be named, told Leicestershire Live she was shocked to have been told any cough sweets she took would contribute to her daily total.

She said: “I wasn’t feeling well last week, so when my consultant texted me mid-week to see how I was getting on, I told her I was full of cold.

“She replied: ‘Make sure you’re synning any cough sweets if you’re using them’. It never occurred to me that I’d need to syn medication, so without realising, I’d been piling on extra Syns every day for cough sweets.

“Even the sugar-free ones had a small Syn value, it was a bit of a shock.

“I just wondered how many others had been doing the same with coughs and colds doing the rounds at the moment – everyone seems to be ill with something.”

What do other members think?

One member wrote: “My consultant said that you should count syns in medicine due to the sugar content. Anything we put in our mouths has to be accounted for!”

Another added: “How awful that they syn something you can’t really not have

“well i’ll have a gain this week then, can’t help having a chest infection and most certainly not paying £7.40 for some tablets!”

What does Slimming World say?

A number of cough sweets, like other sugary sweets, do have a Syn value on our Food Optimising plan, however there are sugar-free varieties available that are very low in Syns and treatment for the occasional illness shouldn’t affect weight loss.

“It’s also worth remembering that there are a number of natural remedies to help with coughs and colds too, such as hot water and lemon, which Slimming World members can enjoy freely.

“If anyone finds they are suffering with regular illnesses we’d strongly recommend that they discuss this with their healthcare team.
