Djokovic Skips Post-Match Interview Amid Controversy with Channel 9

In a surprising turn of events, Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, skipped the traditional on-court interview with Jim Courier following his round of 16 victory over Jiri Lehecka at the 2025 Australian Open. While tensions with sections of the Australian crowd during his match against the Czech player were evident, they were not the reason for this unusual decision.

The Serbian legend later revealed on his X (formerly Twitter) account that his choice stemmed from a dispute with Channel 9, the broadcaster of the Australian Open. According to Djokovic, Tony Jones, a prominent journalist associated with the channel, had disrespected him and his fans during a live broadcast, making mocking and offensive remarks. Djokovic, feeling that neither Jones nor Channel 9 had issued a public apology, opted to avoid the broadcaster’s post-match protocol entirely.

Djokovic’s decision sparked a wide range of reactions, including support from Elon Musk. The billionaire entrepreneur and owner of X weighed in with a strong endorsement of the Serbian star’s stance against what he described as “the negativity filter of legacy media.” Musk tweeted: “It’s way better just to talk to the public directly than go through the negativity filter of legacy media.” Djokovic promptly replied, “Indeed,” solidifying his agreement with Musk’s perspective on bypassing traditional media.

Explaining his actions further on X, Djokovic wrote: “The reason why I chose not to do the interview is that a few days ago, a famous sports journalist from here in Australia, who works for a main broadcaster of the Australian Open – Channel 9 – decided to mock Serbian fans, and he made insulting and offensive comments towards me. So I was hoping he was going to apologize in public, which he hasn’t done yet, and neither did Channel 9.”

This incident has added an unexpected layer of drama to Djokovic’s campaign in Melbourne. Despite the controversy, his focus now shifts to his much-anticipated quarterfinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old Spaniard is widely regarded as the favorite due to his youth and exceptional form, but Djokovic, known for his resilience and mental toughness, is determined to prove that age is no barrier to greatness.

As the tournament progresses, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see whether this controversy impacts Djokovic’s performance on the court. For now, his stance against perceived media disrespect has sparked a larger conversation about how athletes interact with traditional broadcasters in the digital age.
