Fontaines D.C. Wins BRIT Award, Pays Tribute to Amyl and the Sniffers
Fontaines D.C., the Irish alternative rock band, made waves at the 2025 BRIT Awards, securing a second win for Best International Group. The band, currently on tour in Australia, couldn’t accept the award in person but made sure to send a heartfelt message, paying tribute to fellow nominees Amyl and the Sniffers. Frontman Grian Chatten, in a taped acceptance speech, expressed his admiration for the Australian rock band, calling them “one of the most inspiring bands in the world at the moment.”
The BRIT Awards, held on March 2, saw a rare international clash between Fontaines D.C. and Australia’s Amyl and the Sniffers, who were nominated alongside Confidence Man in the Best International Group category. Despite the anticipation of an Australian win, the Dublin-based band triumphed, adding another accolade to their collection after winning the same award in 2023. This moment also marked a milestone in the recognition of Australian talent, with Amyl and the Sniffers and Confidence Man making history as the first Australian groups nominated for this prestigious category in the same year.
While the Australian acts were left to rue their loss, Fontaines D.C. made sure to share their excitement about the win and their respect for their fellow nominees. Chatten’s speech was both humble and appreciative, saying, “Amyl and the Sniffers, if you’re there, we’re sorry we’re not having a drink with you. You’re one of the most inspiring bands in the world at the moment. This is for all of us.” The kind words were a nod to the growing respect between the two bands, who represent a new wave of alternative rock that’s gaining traction globally.
The BRIT Awards ceremony, held at London’s O2 Arena, was full of surprises and standout performances. While Fontaines D.C. took home the international group trophy, other notable winners included Charli XCX, who had an incredible night, claiming four awards, including Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year. The ceremony also saw Chappell Roan earning awards for International Artist and International Song, while Sam Fender bagged wins in the Rock/Alternative category.
As for the Australians, Amyl and the Sniffers were not discouraged by the loss and are currently embarking on a South American tour, while Confidence Man is taking their show to North America. Although the Best International Group title eluded them this year, both bands continue to solidify their status on the global stage, with their unique sound and rising popularity.
The 2025 BRIT Awards showcased not only the success of established artists like Charli XCX but also the growing influence of international acts, with Fontaines D.C. proving once again that rock is alive and well across the globe.
