Mathieu van der Poel Spits at Fans After Being Allegedly Abused and Doused with Urine

In a shocking incident at the Cyclo-cross World Cup in his native Netherlands, cycling world champion Mathieu van der Poel was involved in a heated altercation with spectators. The altercation occurred after the rider was allegedly doused with urine by a group of fans during the race. In response, Van der Poel spat at the group of spectators, causing a stir in the cycling world.

Van der Poel had just claimed his seventh consecutive victory in the event, finishing ahead of compatriot Joris Nieuwenhuis. However, the victory was overshadowed by ugly scenes that marred the race. While crossing the finish line after eight laps at Hulst, Van der Poel was reportedly targeted by a group of rival Belgian fans who threw urine and beer at him, prompting his dramatic response.

Allegations of Abuse and Aggression

Before the incident, Van der Poel had been the target of continuous booing throughout the event. He later slammed the fans responsible, expressing his frustration with their behavior. According to several reports, the abuse started during the warm-up and continued throughout the race, creating a tense atmosphere for the rider. Fans who were present at the scene jumped to Van der Poel’s defense, claiming that the Belgian supporters had crossed the line with their actions. One fan, who stood near the group, wrote on social media, “No, those Belgian ‘fans’ were throwing urine and beer at him.”

Others joined in condemning the behavior of the spectators. One fan added, “They should be banned from all races for life,” while another stated, “I hope these people are found and punished. It’s always easy to say Mathieu should not have done this, but until you are in the same place, you feel helpless. Every cross there is another group, and they always get what they want.”

Van der Poel Speaks Out

Following the race, Van der Poel expressed his frustration, saying there was no place in cycling—or any sport—for such hostility. “I’m done with that bunch of booers,” he said. “It was continuous, even during the warm-up process. Then it is better to stay at home.”

The world champion went on to criticize the abuse, pointing out the severity of the insults hurled at him by the group. “Just ask them what they shouted. I am not going to repeat that,” he remarked. “This has no place in sports. No one should receive boos. After a while, it was enough, also for me.”

While Van der Poel’s reaction was polarizing, many defended him, understanding that the abuse he faced was far beyond the typical rivalry or competitive spirit of sports. The incident highlights the dark side of fan culture and the increasing pressure athletes face from extreme spectators. Regardless of his controversial response, the focus remains on the unacceptable behavior of those responsible for the harassment, with many calling for severe repercussions for the individuals involved.
