ABBA, one of the most influential pop groups of all time, owes its origins to Sweden in the mid-1960s. It was in June 1966 that two future musical legends, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, met for the first time. At that point, Björn was a member of the Hootenanny Singers, a well-known folk music group in Sweden. Benny, on the other hand, was playing keyboards for The Hep Stars, the biggest pop group of the 1960s in Sweden.
Despite their different musical backgrounds, the pair quickly formed a creative bond. Just a few weeks after their first meeting, they co-wrote their first song. This marked the beginning of a musical partnership that would shape the sound of ABBA for years to come. By the end of the decade, their songwriting collaboration had evolved, with Benny leaving The Hep Stars and Björn’s Hootenanny Singers largely ceasing its live performances. They focused their efforts on recording music under the Polar Music record label, which was owned by Stig Anderson, a man who would later play a significant role in the group’s rise to fame. Stig also contributed lyrics to many of ABBA’s early hits, shaping the group’s distinct sound.
The real turning point came in 1969 when Björn and Benny met two women who would not only become their fiancées but also the other halves of ABBA. Agnetha Fältskog, born in 1950, was already a successful solo singer by the time she met Björn. Her career had begun in 1967 with her first single, and she had built a strong following in Sweden. Agnetha and Björn were married in July 1971, marking the beginning of their personal and professional partnership.
Anni-Frid Lyngstad, known as Frida, was the second woman to join the group. Like Agnetha, Frida had started her recording career shortly before her. Although born in Norway, she moved to Sweden at a young age and quickly became a popular solo artist. In 1978, Benny and Frida also tied the knot, strengthening the bond between the two couples.
By 1970, the four musicians—Björn, Benny, Agnetha, and Frida—formed ABBA, named after the first letter of each of their names. With their combined musical talents, charismatic performances, and infectious pop sound, ABBA quickly became a global phenomenon. Their harmonies, memorable melodies, and captivating stage presence made them one of the most successful and beloved pop acts in history.
