Earl Monroe Says Why Wilt Chamberlain is Better than Michael Jordan

The debate over who holds the title of the greatest basketball player of all time (GOAT) has long been dominated by one name: Michael Jordan. With six championships, five MVP awards, and an unmatched competitive drive, Jordan is widely considered the gold standard in basketball. However, NBA legend Earl “The Pearl” Monroe has a different perspective. In his eyes, Wilt Chamberlain stands above Jordan in the GOAT debate.

Wilt’s Case for the GOAT

When discussing the GOAT, most basketball fans and analysts gravitate toward Michael Jordan. His impact on the game, both on and off the court, is undeniable. However, a few players have strong cases to challenge him, such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, LeBron James, and of course, Wilt Chamberlain.

Chamberlain, often regarded as the most dominant individual force in NBA history, holds records that may never be broken. His 100-point game, 50.4 points per game season average, and unparalleled rebounding numbers solidify his legendary status. However, critics often point to his lack of championships (only two) and the level of competition he faced in his era. Despite this, Monroe, who played against Wilt, firmly believes that Chamberlain’s influence on the game surpasses that of Jordan.

Monroe’s Unique Perspective

Earl Monroe, a Hall of Famer and one of the most electrifying guards of the 1960s and 70s, spent his career with the Baltimore Bullets and the New York Knicks. He won an NBA championship in 1973 with the Knicks, but he was also on the losing side of Wilt Chamberlain’s second championship in 1972.

That series was particularly remarkable because Chamberlain played through a severe hand injury. Despite this, he put up a historic performance in the Finals-clinching game, recording 24 points, 29 rebounds, and 10 blocks. At 35 years old, Wilt became the oldest Finals MVP in history, proving his dominance even in the twilight of his career. Monroe witnessed this firsthand and believes that moment cemented Wilt’s legacy as the greatest ever.

Monroe’s Take on the Debate

In a discussion about the GOAT, Monroe explained why he puts Chamberlain above Jordan:

“To me, it’s no real debate. We had great players with Michael and LeBron. Michael set the tone for the guys from the 80s and up…I don’t put him ahead of Wilt. Everybody’s close, but you know, Wilt just did things that today is still a part of the game, where it’s made the game what it is today.”

Monroe’s words highlight the lasting impact Wilt had on the game. While Jordan revolutionized basketball in the modern era, Wilt’s influence on scoring, athleticism, and sheer dominance laid the foundation for the game itself.

Final Thoughts

The GOAT debate will never have a definitive answer, as opinions vary based on different eras, play styles, and personal preferences. However, when a legend who played against Wilt and saw his greatness firsthand places him above Jordan, it adds weight to Chamberlain’s case. While Jordan remains the popular choice, Wilt Chamberlain must always be part of the conversation.
