Christopher Nkunku’s future at Chelsea is uncertain, with reports suggesting that Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are both keen on signing the French forward if he decides to leave this January. The 27-year-old’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has been frustrating, marked by injury setbacks and limited playing time. Despite his potential, Nkunku has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Mauricio Pochettino, and the Blues could allow him to leave if he pushes for a move.
A Challenging Start at Chelsea
Nkunku arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2023 from RB Leipzig for a reported £52 million, following an impressive season in the Bundesliga. He was expected to play a key role in Chelsea’s attacking plans, bringing creativity and goals to a team in transition. However, his debut season has been plagued by injuries, limiting him to just 14 appearances across all competitions. While he started Chelsea’s opening Premier League match, Nkunku has only made three league starts out of 20 this season. Instead, he has featured more regularly in the Conference League, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.
His limited involvement in the Premier League, coupled with his injury struggles, has raised questions about his future at Chelsea. Nkunku has largely been relegated to a backup role behind summer signing Nicolas Jackson, and was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace.
Interest from Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid
Reports suggest that both Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Nkunku’s situation closely. Bayern, in particular, has shown interest in the French forward, as they search for a versatile attacker who can contribute both as a creator and a scorer. With Thomas Müller nearing the end of his career, Bayern could see Nkunku as a long-term option to bolster their attacking options.
Atletico Madrid, under Diego Simeone, is also reportedly keen on Nkunku. Known for his tactical discipline and ability to play across various attacking positions, Nkunku would fit well into Atletico’s system. Simeone’s emphasis on hard work and quick counter-attacks could suit Nkunku’s style of play.
Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Nkunku’s former club, is said to be keeping an eye on the situation, although no formal offer has materialized.
Chelsea’s Stance and Potential Move
Chelsea is reportedly not looking to sell Nkunku unless he expresses a desire to leave. However, if the Frenchman does push for a transfer, the Blues would likely want to recoup as much of the £52 million they paid for him. Should Nkunku depart, Chelsea would need to find a replacement, which could prove difficult in the January market.
As the transfer window progresses, Nkunku’s future remains uncertain, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid leading the race for his signature.
